George was not doing so well, in the first week of life. So drank his milk from a bowl.

George’s story

Little George was born 5th August 2008, he was a beautiful foal,he got up and suckled and everything was going to plan. After a few days George didn’t have the same sparkle and energy the other foals had, he just stood with mum looking quite depressed. He was still suckling and his temperature was fine Mum was fit and seemed very well she was eating well and seemed very relaxed. By the 4th day I phoned the vet as I was really not happy with him. The vet checked both Mum and baby but could find nothing wrong. The conclusion we came to was that Sally’s milk was not the best quality, Sally was 20 years old, and very fit. The vet suggested we supplement George’s feeds.

This was a Friday, so there were a lot of frantic phone calls to all the feed merchants in the area, to get hold of some mares milk powder, we found some 20 miles away, so Hugh set off to get it be fore they shut for the weekend. And I got onto the company that make it, explained the situation and they advised me on the amount he should have as it was to strong for him at the recommended amount.

We set to that evening trying to get him to suckle from a bottle, but he was having none of it! I put my fingers in a bowl to see if he would suck them. No luck……. This went on all over the weekend every couple of hours during the day as he was still drinking from mum as well. By Sunday night I was in tears with frustration as he was getting weaker and we were getting nowhere, and didn’t know what else to try. Then all of a sudden he supped the milk in the bowl, we were just amazed, George didn’t look back.

I made up the milk in 500ml amounts and he would drink as much as he wanted I did this every 2 hours during the day and measured what he had. He drank from mum at night and suckled from her when he felt like it.

George was weighed every 2 days to check his weight gain,and after 3days he was racing round the paddock kicking his heels with every one else.

After 2/3 weeks we introduced some milk pellets, which he soon took too, we were able to reduce his milk feeds over the next few weeks. When he saw us coming out he would race across the paddock to get his milk.

He soon caught up with the rest of the foals, and at 5 months he still loved his milk morning and evening, we just fed him until all the milk was gone.

George went on to be a fine young man and went to his new home with Granville.

As for Sally… She is know retired enjoying being Auntie to all the new foals that arrive

Keith as he is known at home was purchased from Kim Stanton of Jackador Stud. His Grand father is Country Music Kenny Rogers and Great Grandfather is the famous Country Music George Jones. Keith is very correct, compact, with good bone, he has produced some great foals with wonderful personalities

Cashal Ian was born on 18th July 2009. His Mum Cashal Daysha is a Texas Two Steps daughter, Ian is her first foal and really tiny he weighed 6 kg and 17inches at 1 day old.

I am 1 week old but my legs are too short for these wellies!!

Feeding

Using strip grazing to restrict feeding is an important discipline and management of your paddocks during the summer months, while the grass is so rich, ensures a happy and balanced diet for your donkeys. They need fresh water daily.

During the winter months you can give a small amount of Alfa-A and pasture mix, and a small wedge of barley straw or hay. Miniatures don’t like icy water so provide them with warm fresh water as often as they require. Avoid treats these don’t do the waist line any good, and also encourage them to nip!

If you are purchasing young stock it is advisable to give them a small feed daily, during their first year, this helps with their development, this also applies if you plan to have a breeding Jenny.

If possible don’t use straw for bedding in your shelter and stable, miniature donkeys are like food junkies and will quite happily munch through their bed. It is also difficult to recycle.

Make sure your feed store is secure! We have a Jenny that can sniff out food from 50 paces!!
