Useful Information

A single donkey will become very depressed and lonely, as they are a herd animal. You will need to have a pair as companions.
Miniature Donkeys are a life time commitment, living for 25 to 30 years or longer. They originate from hotter arid countries so our pastures and paddocks are too rich for them, careful management of your paddocks is needed so they don’t get to fat and unhealthy.

Please check all pastures for Ragwort, It is very dangerous and is notifiable. When buying Hay get to no the farmer that makes it, and that his fields are free from Ragwort. It is much more palatable when dry.

Miniatures are not hardy or water proof; so you need a good shelter to protect them from our inclement weather. A stable is also advisable. Our donkeys are all stabled at night. They will stand at the gate and protest if we are late getting them in.

Miniatures are equines. Requiring the same care for worming (every 8 weeks) and remembering how small they are a good breeder or your vet will be happy to advice on quantities and on a worming program. They also need a Farrier (every 10 to 12 weeks) Donkey feet are slightly different to horses and ponies; check your Farrier understands donkey’s feet.

Miniatures should have been given tetanus vaccinations at the stud they were born at, you will need to give them a booster at 1 year old and then every 2 years.

Miniatures need to have their teeth checked yearly.

Miniatures need a passport as it is a legal requirement.

Feeding

Using strip grazing to restrict feeding is an important discipline and management of your paddocks during the summer months, while the grass is so rich, ensures a happy and balanced diet for your donkeys. They need fresh water daily.
